Egypt : Torture in police stations continuing in climate of impunity

Alkarama is deeply concerned by the continuing prevalence of torture in Egyptian police stations and the increase of deaths as a result of torture. This trend demonstrates the lack of political will to honor the pledges made by the Egyptian authorities following the revolution to put an end to this practice and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Essam Atta died under torture while detained in Tora Prison following an unfair trial before a military court. On 8 June 2013, General Prosecutor decided to close the investigation opened in Essam Atta's case, following a decision by the Cairo Court of Appeal to suspend the case. Alkarama condemns the General Prosecutor's decision, as well as the impunity of the Egyptian security services that results from this decision.

Egypt: Condemn and Investigate Killing of 109 Protestors by Military and Police

At least one hundred and nine protestors have been shot dead by the Egyptian military and police during demonstrations between 3 and 8 July 2013. The deadliest shooting occurred at dawn on 8 July 2013 during a sit-in organized outside the presidential guard facility, with a documented 78 people killed by security forces. Deeply concerned by this intolerable violation of the basic right to life, today Alkarama requested that the UN firmly condemn these killings and call on the Egyptian military authorities to put an end to such serious abuses. The transitional government should ensure prompt, impartial investigations to determine those responsible for these killings and prosecute them.

Egypt: Respect people's right to life, liberty and freedom of expression

Following the military coup that ousted President Morsi on 2 July 2013, Alkarama is deeply concerned by early reports of deaths of protestors, disappearances, arbitrary arrests, and a crackdown on freedom of expression by Egyptian military and police forces. Alkarama calls on all security forces, including the military and police, to ensure respect for the Egyptian's people right to life, liberty and freedom of expression and assembly, and urges all parties to restrain from the excessive use of force and other human rights violations.
