Egypt: 43 Alkarama cases raised in Committee against Torture List of Issues

Alkarama commends the fact that a number of its most serious cases were raised in the Committee against Torture's List of Issues on Egypt.

The Committee against Torture is mandated to periodically review implantation of the rights contained in the international Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, to which Egypt acceded on 25 June 1986.

With Egypt due to be reviewed by the Committee against Torture in 2012 the Committee adopted in 2010 its List of Issues under the new procedure of List of Issues Prior to Reporting (see here for more information about this procedure). In preparation of this, Alkarama had submitted information on the human rights situation in Egypt, including a number of extremely concerning individual cases. We commend the fact that the Committee decided to include a total of 43 of our cases in their List of Issues. These are:

26 members of the Muslim Brotherhood arrested between December 2006 and January 2007

Mr Mahmoud Ezzat and 12 other members of the Muslim Brotherhood:

Mr Abdessadek Zahran Chahine (died as a result of torture):

Mr Magdi Anwar Mar'i (died as a result of torture):

Mr Ahmed Hassan Fouad (died as a result of torture):

Mr Mohamed Abdulhafid Neboua (died as a result of torture):

Mr Hisham Mahmoud Diab (tortured and arbitrarily detained):

Alkarama looks forward to the replies on these cases which are expected to be provided in the Egyptian periodic report to the Committee by 2012.
