Repression in Egypt: Military police and pro Mubarak groups arrest 10 members of local human rights NGOs and members of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch

At 15 o'clock Egyptian time, Military Police accompanied by unidentified men in civilian clothes entered the offices of the Hisham Mubarak Law Center in Souk Al Tawfiqia street, Cairo, and arrested more than 20 members of Egyptian and international NGOs. These people were members of the Committee for the Defense of the Egypt Protesters. As they were arrested they were beaten by the men taking them away, and their phones and other office equipment was confiscated.

Those arrested include:

* · Ahmad Seif Al Islam (Hisham Mubarak Law Center)
* · Mona Al Masry (Hisham Mubarak Law Center)
* · Khaled Ali (Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights)
* · Nada Sadek
* · Mohamed El Taher
* · Two members of Amnesty International
* · And a member of Human Rights Watch

Alkarama has also been informed that security forces and unidentified men in civilian clothes have been harassing and arresting journalists, searching their hotel rooms, especially in the Hilton Hotel, and confiscating cameras and other equipment.

Alkarama severely condemns the Egyptian government for this serious attack on human rights defenders and this further repression of freedom of expression in Egypt. It has urgently communicated this information to the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights and on the Special Rapporteurs on human rights defenders and on freedom of expression calling on them to take action on these violations.
