Egypt: Two new waves of arrests

Alkarama has received news of two separate new waves of arrests in Daqahliyah governorate. These arrests occur in the context of hundreds of arrests over the past few months which mainly target members and leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Relatives of "Zeitoun cell" arrested in Kom al-Darby

The first of these two recent waves of arrests occurred on 21 October 2009 in Kom al-Darby, a village in Mansoura (Daqahliyah governorate), when four individuals were taken from their homes at dawn by State Security Intelligence (SSI) forces. It is believed that they are accused of belonging to the "Zeitoun cell", 16 members of which were arrested in July 2009. Their names are as follows:

1. Saad Ezzet Ali (brother of Ahmad Ezzet Ali)

2. Wael Sabry Naga

3. Saad Ali Nureddine

4. Ali Ezzet Nureddine

Elsewhere, 36 victims of arbitrary detention in Daqahliyah on 21 and 22 October 2009

27 Egyptian citizens were arrested in Daqhlia governorate by government security services in Daqahliyah governorate on 21 October 2009. Another nine individuals were arrested the day after, under the same circumstances. Sources indicate that these people were arrested on orders from the Minister of the Interior, under the pretext of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood. The detainees later learned the Attorney General had initiated an investigation into their cases and that they would be detained for 15 days in al-Marg Prison.
