On 28 July 2015, Alkarama and Human Rights Guardians sent a communication to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced Disappearances (WGEID) regarding the case of Hassan Saeed, an activist from Homs who disappeared following his arrest by members of the army and the Military Intelligence in August 2012.

Syria: Human Rights Defenders Hussein Gharir and Hani Al Zitani Set Free While Mazen Darwish Remains Detained

On 17 and 18 July 2015, members of the Syrian Centre for Media and Freedom of Expression (SCM) Hussein Gharir and Hani Al Zitani were freed from Hama Prison, after three years spent behind bars, following numerous calls by Alkarama and numerous other organisations, as well as various UN instances. SCM's Director, the prominent journalist Mazen Darwish, remains however detained.

On 25 June 2015, Alkarama and Human Rights Guardians sent a communication to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), concerning the case of Ahmed Al Zaidan, a 28-year-old Syrian married worker from Al Lataminah, a village in northern Syria, disappeared since his arrest by the Syrian Military Security in September 2012.

Joint Statement: UN Security Council Should Take Immediate Action against Brutality in Syria

We are a coalition of human rights and humanitarian organizations working to protect and assist the civilians of Syria. We wish to express our collective outrage at the never ending state of unchecked brutality in Syria and call on the UN Security Council to take immediate action.  Given continuing indiscriminate attacks against civilians within Syria, we urge each member of the Security Council to now take steps to implement further diplomatic measures given clear and ongoing non-compliance with Resolution 2139, specifically measures to establish a mechanism to track and publically expose indiscriminate attacks by any means against civilians, including barrel bombs or car bombs, and to lay down clear consequences for violators.

Syria: UN Calls for the Release of Freedom of Speech Advocate Bassel Khartabil

During its 72nd session held in Geneva on 20-29 April 2015, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) adopted an Opinion on the case of Bassel Khartabil, a fervent defender of the right to freedom of expression who has been detained without trial since his arrest by the military security on 15 March 2012. In this Opinion, the WGAD considers his detention "arbitrary" and calls for his immediate release.
