Arrest and enforced disappearance of Anas
On 4 August 2013, Anas was returning home, in Aleppo where he works as an electrical engineer after visiting his sister in Gaziantep, Turkey.

He was arrested at a checkpoint set up by the Syrian regular forces at the Bab el Ksar gate which marks the borders between the areas under Syrian military control and those under rebels' control.

As they had not heard from him the whole day, his family phoned him in vain several times. Having learned from eyewitnesses that he was arrested, the family took numerous steps with local authorities to find him but were hampered by the blunt silence of the authorities which refused to recognise his arrest.

Forced to perform military service because of his specific skills
The victim's sister learned that her brother, because of his specific skills, had received an order to perform his military service even though he had previously paid a tax exemption. Anyhow, he has not given any signs of life since his arrest and his family fears that he would be detained incommunicado for dubious reasons, all the more as the military authorities refuse to give any information on his fate.

Thus, Alkarama considers this to be an enforced disappearance and called on the United Nations Working Group to urgently intervene with the Syrian authorities to ensure that the victim be released or, at the very least, placed under the protection of the law.
