Saudi Arabia: Community Mediator Charged with ‘Disturbing the Peace'

The Prosecutor General's office in Dammam has charged local community mediator, Mikhlif Al-Shammari, 55, with ‘disturbing the peace'. A former businessman from Al-Khobar, a suburb of Dammam in Saudi Arabia's Eastern province, Mr Al-Shammari has recently come under attack from the Saudi authorities for his human rights work as a intermediary between the local Sunni and Shia communities.

Abdullah Hassan, a member of the living in Ireland, was arrested in Saudi Arabia for the first time in 19 November 2005 and detained incommunicado for more than nine months before being released. Following his release, his passport was confiscated and he was unable to leave the country. He was arrested again on 17 May 2007, and is now held incommunicado and threatened with extradition to Libya.

Nasser Al-Hajiri, arrested on16 December 2007 during his pilgrimage to Mecca, has been detained for more than two and a half years without charge or trial despite being afflicted by a worsening cancer in the form of a brain tumour. His health currently in a critical state and his family and other observers have become seriously concerned for his life.

Abdul Hakim Gellani, the British citizen who was disappeared by Saudi intelligence services from his hotel room in Mecca on 8 August 2007, has thankfully reappeared, according to recent information. On 27 September 2007, Saudi authorities confirmed his imprisonment; however he remains arbitrarily detained, without charge or ever having been subject to any legal proceedings.
