Saudi Arabia: Son of human rights activist, Thamir Al-Khodr arrested in Al-Qasim

Alkarama has just received a report from the Saudi Civil & Political Rights Association that, Thamir Bin Abd Al-Karim Al-Khodr was arrested on 3 March 2010. He is the eldest son of Dr Abd Al-Karim Bin Yusuf Al-Khodr, a teacher of comparative jurisprudence at the Faculty of Shari'a, and a member of the Saudi Civil & Political Rights Association. It is possible that Thamir was arrested because of his father's human rights work.

The report also stated that Thamir Al-Khodr is among several university students interested in human rights and public affairs, and that he is particularly active in following the cases of prisoners. He is also involved with a youth movement calling for a constitutional reform. His imprisonment sends a negative message to religious youth who are beginning to understand the importance of peaceful action and human rights activism as a means of reform, and an alternative to violence and extremism. Unfortunately, the repressive security services do not differentiate between violence and peaceful action.

According to the report, the Al-Qasim Investigative Services frequently carry out arrests and raids in Buraidah, aimed at both students and adults. Even women and infant children are arrested.

Alkarama calls upon the Saudi authorities to release of Thamir Al-Khodr and all prisoners of conscience held in Saudi jails. Alkarama will submit Thamir's case to the UN special procedures, and reminds the Saudi authorities that this arrest violates their domestic and international commitments.
