Libya: Disappearance of Salem Abdaslam since December 2007

Alkarama submitted on 16 April 2007 a communication to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) asking it to take urgent action in the case of Mr. Abdaslam, arrested on 24 December 2007 by agents of the Libyan internal security.

Wanis Charef El Abani, a judge at the Court of First Instance in Benghazi, was arrested in 1990 and held incommunicado for years. Considered as a forcibly disappeared person, Alkarama had submitted on 15 October 2007 a communication to the Human Rights Committee about him. He has just been released on 9 April 2008.

Alkarama for Human Rights and TRIAL (Track Impunity Always), April 12, 2008

As part of their cooperation agreement, the organizations TRIAL (Track Impunity Always) and ALKARAMA for Human Rights submitted jointly, on 7 April, 2008, an individual communication to the Human Rights Committee relating to Dr Idris Aboufaied and his brother Juma, both victims of serious human rights violations by the Libyan authorities.

The Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had been seized by AlKarama in order to intervene in the case of Dr. Mohamed Hassan Aboussedra, who was arrested on the night of January 19, 1989 and disappeared since 2005. The Working Group adopted regarding this case, in its penultimate session, an opinion which has been notified to AlKarama.

Libya: Disappearance of an asylum-seeker deported from Switzerland

Alkarama has requested the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to intervene in the case of Mr Abdelsalam Ibrahim Mohammed, missing since his return from Switzerland. Mr. Mohammed, born December 7, 1967, has been sent back to Libya by special plane from Zurich airport on November 23, 2007. His request for asylum had been rejected by Swiss authorities. He has disappeared since his expulsion.
