Libya: Disappearance of Salem Abdaslam since December 2007

Alkarama for Human Rights, April 17, 2008

Alkarama submitted on 16 April 2007 a communication to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) asking it to take urgent action in the case of Mr. Abdaslam, arrested on 24 December 2007 by agents of the Libyan internal security.

Mr. Mohamed Salem Mjber ABDASLAM, Libyan citizen born on 7 February 1974 and living in Sweden, traveled on 24 December  2007 to Libya by plane to visit his parents residing in Zliten, a city located about 150 kilometres east of Tripoli.

Four days after his arrival, officers of Interior Security (Amn Al Addakhili) went at night to his home to Zliten and arrested him.

According to his family, the officers showed no judicial warrant or provided a reason for his arrest.

Several members of his family have made contacts with the authorities and in particular the services of the Interior security of Zliten and Tripoli as well as from the "popular commissions" to inquire about his whereabouts and the reasons for his arrest and his detention, but without any result.

The authorities denied having arrested him.

However, AlKarama recently received the testimony of a person who was released on 3 February 2008 from the detention centre where he was held incommunicado for several months. This person claims to have met Mr. Abdaslam in that centre at the beginning of February 2008, where he was still detained.

Knowing which treatments are often exposed to persons detained incommunicado, Alkarama requests the WGEID to intervene urgently with the Libyan authorities to secure the release of Mr. Abdaslam or place him under the protection of the law as soon as possible.
