Saudi Arabia: Saudi Authorities Confirm Abdul Hakim Gellani's Imprisonment

Abdul Hakim Gellani, the British citizen who was disappeared by Saudi intelligence services from his hotel room in Mecca on 8 August 2007, has thankfully reappeared, according to recent information. On 27 September 2007, Saudi authorities confirmed his imprisonment; however he remains arbitrarily detained, without charge or ever having been subject to any legal proceedings.

Alkarama sent his case to the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on 7 September 2007, requesting its intervention on Abdul Hakim Gellani's behalf, for fear that his incommunicado detention could lead to torture, even his death.

Only yesterday, 26 September 2007, Alkarama sent his case to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, asking it to intercede with Saudi government in order to request his immediate release.

For more information regarding Abdul Hakim Gellani's arrest and personal history, please refer to Alkarama's press release on 7 September 2007 entitled "Saudi Arabia: British citizen, Abdul Hakim Gellani, is disappeared in Mecca".
