Deyaa Al Abdullah ( (ضياء العبد لله, a known poet and writer, was disappeared by the Syrian Political Security forces on 29 June 2011. His family has no news from him since this day.

Thirty eight years old, Al Abdullah usually lives with his family in a village named Al Tha'lah in the Al Swedah region. He is a known poet and the author of a number of publications (LINK: http://deyaalabdalla.maktoobblog.com/). He was already detained due to his writings in 1999, only being released nearly a year later following a general amnesty, without any judicial procedures having been opened against him.

On 29 June 2011, agents of the Political Security, who were wearing civilian clothes, raided Mr Al Abdullah's place of work in Al Tha'lah village. They arrested Mr Al Abdullah, taking him to an unknown location. The authorities refuse to acknowledge his detention or to provide any information on his fate or whereabouts to his family.

On 26 September 2011, Alkarama submitted Mr Al Abdullah's case to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, calling on them to urgently intervene with the Syrian authorities to release Al Abdullah or place him under the protection of the law as quickly as is possible.

During Mr Al Abdullah's arrest, the above mentioned agents did not present any judicial warrant, nor did they give a reason for his arrest. They also confiscated personal belongings from Mr Al Abdullah's office, including his computer.

A number of peaceful demonstrations have taken place in Al Swedah to call for Al Abdullah's release as well as the release of thousands of other people disappeared or detained in the country.

Alkarama fears for Mr Al Abdullah's physical and mental integrity as he is at high risk of torture and ill-treatment during this disappearance.
