Syria: Political Security Disappear a young human rights defender from Al Hasakah

On 4 September, Ayo Jwan, a young activist and human rights defender, was disappeared from his home in Al Hasakah by members of the Political Security. His family has no news from him since this date.
Ayo Jwan ( (أيو جوان is 30 years old and lives with his family in Ras Al Ain, Al Hasakah, Syria. He has been a member of the Committees for the Defense of Democracy Freedoms and Human Rights in Syria for years, and has been active defending those arrested in recent demonstrations and calling for peaceful change in the country.

On 4 September 2011, agents of the Syrian Political Security, who were wearing civilian clothes, raided Mr Jwan's house, arrested him and took him to an unknown location. These agents did not present a judicial warrant for his arrest, nor did they give any reason.

On 15 September 2011, Alkarama submitted Mr Jwan's case to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances with a copy to the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders and the Special Rapporteurs on Torture as he is at high risk of torture and ill-treatment during his disappearance.

A number of peaceful demonstrations have taken place in the country to call to Mr Jwan's release as well as the release of thousands of other people disappeared or detained. However, the Syrian Political Security refuses to provide any information on Mr Jwan's fate or whereabouts.

Alkarama is extremely concerned at the continued degradation of the human rights situation in Syria. More than 2700 people have been killed and thousands injured in ongoing protests calling for political changes in Syria.
