Qatar: Nayef Bin Ghanim Al-Attiyah arrested

Reliable sources have confirmed that Nayef Bin Ghanim Al-Attiyah was arrested by the Qatari intelligence services following the arrest of his cousin Fawaz Al-Attiyah, who is a British national. Alkarama's source has confirmed that Nayef Al-Attiyah was arrested after he raised a case against the Qatari Prime Minister before a Qatari Court on behalf of his cousin Fawaz Al-Attiyah.

Nayef Al-Attiyah was arrested three months before his cousin Fawaz, who was pressured for summons by the Qatari authorities after publishing a book which apparently interpreted historical events contrary to that of the official State version.

During his imprisonment, Nayef was subjected to various forms of torture, including beatings, suspension and psychological torture. For nearly eight months now he has been living under less than humane conditions. He is currently held incommunicado and prevented from seeing the sunlight under solitary confinement.

Alkarama would like to alert the Qatari authorities of the edicts under their Constitution and their responsibility to international law, which ban all human rights violations such as torture and arbitrary detention. Alkarama continues to appeal for Nayef and Fawaz Al-Attiyah's release and intends to submit their cases to the UN human rights special procedures.
