Syria: FREED - Ma'an Aqil released after nearly three months arbitrary detention

Maan-Aqil
Alkarama has just been informed that Syrian journalist, Ma'an Aqil, was released by the Syrian authorities on Tuesday 23 February 2010, after spending nearly three months in jail without any legal proceedings.

The journalist of Damascus-based Al-Thawra newspaper was arrested by element of the General Intelligence Department on 22 November 2009. Ma'an Aqil had previously been arrested in 1987 in a politically motivated arrest, and spent nine years behind bars. In response to his most recent arrest, Alkarama sent Ma'an Aqil's case to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on 11 December 2009.

Alkarama takes this opportunity to demand that the Syrian authorities release all prisoners of conscience and to stop targeting them through arbitrary arrest.
