Egypt: Two Muslim Brotherhood student activists arrested for their political views

On Wednesday 4 November 2009, two university students were summoned by the police on fabricated charges. They were known at the university for their political activism in favor of the Egyptian opposition movement, the Muslim Brotherhood. The two students were taken to al-Mansoura police station on 5 November 2009, but a court ordered their release on 7 November 2009. However, the State Security Prosecution issued a warrant for their arrest on 9 November 2009 and they were immediately transferred to Wadi al-Natroun prison - where they remain to date.

Details regarding the detainees are as follows:

Khaled Abdel Wahhab Mohamed Ali al-Din, 20, from Abu Ali in Gharbeya governorate, is a third year student at Al-Azhar University in al-Mansoura.

Abdel Fattah Othman Omar Zaher, 21, from Sandoub in Daqahleya governorate, is also a student at al-Azhar University in al-Mansoura.

This case comes just 10 days after State Security Investigation arrested eight students in Zagaziq on accusations of belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood. Alkarama continues to gather information regarding these most recent cases with the purpose of informing the UN special procedures.
