Egypt: Two further cases of extrajudicial killings by security forces

Alkarama has just received news of two further extrajudicial killings by Egyptian security forces. This follows other reports of the excessive use of force by the, such as in the cases of Magdi Marei and Faras Barakat.

Farouq Al-Said killed at Al-Saida Zainab police station

On 17 September 2009, Farouq Mohammad Mahmoud Al-Said was arrested by security forces on drug charges and taken to Al-Saida Zainab police station. While in police custody he was assaulted, tortured and severely beaten, which resulted in his death.

Hassan Shindi strangled to death near his home

On 23 September 2009, Hassan Shindi's family awoke to find him dead; strangled and tied by his hands and feet, close to his home in a village near Alexandria. Sources indicate that his death was as a result of an on-going dispute over land claims between police officers and local farmers, of whom Hassan Shindi was a community leader. Sources also indicate that local security forces were most likely responsible for this summary execution.
