Alkarama seized the Special Procedures of the United Nations of the case of
Sofiane Alazami today, who was abducted on the night of 5-6 May 2012 while he was on his way to Casablanca to look for work. His family has not received any news of him since this date, despite several attempts to find him.
Sofiane Alazami left Fez to go to Casablanca while looking for work. He called his mother on 5 May around 4:00 a.m. to let her know that he was in Casablanca but that he would soon return to Fez.
After several days without news, his family reported his disappearance to the police. The father thus learned that the numbers of the calls they had received originated at the switchboard of the Maarif police station in Casablanca.
The father of Sofiane Alazami went to several police stations to inquire if his son was there but the authorities he spoke to refused to acknowledge either his arrest or detention. He was therefore clearly a victim of an enforced disappearance.
Alkarama deplores the persistence of these practices on the part of the security services that all had hoped would be eradicated, especially given the recent constitutional reforms.
Alkarama welcomes the recent statements by the Minister of Justice and Civil Liberties who condemned the practice of torture in police stations. We call upon him to enforce the principles of the rule of law and international obligations of Morocco in the protection of the fundamental rights of human beings.
