Morocco: Release of Mr. Karim Khadir

Mr. Karim Khader, who has dual British-Moroccan citizenship and lives in London, was arrested 24 June 2011 after arriving at Tanger port. He was freed 30 June 2011.

Recollection of the facts:

Mr. Karim Khader (كريم خادر) is 30 years old and of dual British-Moroccan citizenship; he is an air-conditioning engineer and normally lives in London in the United Kingdom. He was arrested 24 June 2011 at 5:30 am at the port of Tanger where he was disembarking from a ship with his father-in-law.

The police of the port of Tanger seized his mobile phone before handcuffing him. He was not informed of the reason for his arrest.

It was not until the 28th of June that a police officer contacted Mr. Khader's family-in-law in Larache (town in north-Morocco) to tell them that he could be found at the central police station of Al-Maarif in Casablanca.

Mr. Karim Khader's family feared that his arrest was linked to the crackdown against the Islamic movement in Morocco. Alkarama alerted the Special Rapporteur on Torture on 29 June 2011.
