Syria: Ziad Ramadan to be tried; Special Tribunal for Lebanon says he is not key witness in Hariri investigation

Until last week, Ziad Ramadan remained detained in the Palestine Branch of Damascus Prison, where he has been stuck for over 5 years without trial or even being presented before a judge. However, Alkarama has learnt that he is to be presented before the Syrian State Security Supreme Court on Monday 17 January 2011.

Alkarama submitted Dr Tuhama Mahmoud Ma'ruf's case to the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression today. Dr Tohama was arrested on 6 February 2010 allegedly due to her membership to Syria's Communist Labor Party. In addition to her political activities, she is the wife of political detainee and former Syrian writer Bakr Sidqi. Political opposition groups are frequently targeted by the Syrian authorities, arresting members and often delivering heavy sentences as a result.

Syria: Female Dentist Arrested for Membership to Banned Political Party

Tuhama Mahmoud Ma'ruf, 46, a dentist, married with two children, was most recently arrested on 6 February 2010 by the criminal security forces in Aleppo, for her alleged involvement with the Communist Labor Party in Syria. Mrs Ma'ruf is the wife of Mr Bakr Sidqi - a former political prisoner and a well-known Syrian writer.

On 28 October 2010 Alkarama sent Tuhama Ma'ruf's case to the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and the protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, requesting his intervention with the Syrian authorities, in an effort to release Mrs Ma'ruf, in accordance with Syrian domestic law and the international agreements signed by Syria.

Alkarama issued an appeal today to the Special Rapporteur on Torture, requesting their intervention with the Syrian authorities to take immediate measures to release student blogger Ms. Tal Mallohi.

Ms. Tal Malouhi, 19, is a 2nd year university student at the Faculty of Literature and lives with her family in the Homs, central Syria.

Syria: Human Rights Activist Unjustly Sentenced to One Year's Imprisonment

Alkarama has received information that the 3rd Military Unit Judge in Aleppo has unjustly sentenced Abd Al-Hafiz Abd Al-Rahman on Wednesday 29 September 2010 to a year's imprisonment under Article 288 of the Syrian Penal Code.
