On 10 April 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Working on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) regarding the disappearances of four Egyptian citizens in late 2014 and early 2015, because of their alleged affiliation with the Muslim Brotherhood, a socio-political movement that continues to be the subject of a violent repression from the authorities. Their political opinions also put them at direct risk of being tortured or ill-treated while being secretly detained, or of being denied necessary medical treatment, a common practice in Egypt.
On 8 April 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, arbitrary and summary executions (SR SUMX), regarding the imminent execution of six Egyptian citizens sentenced to death for crime they could not have committed since they were secretly detained in the infamous Azouli military prison when the events occurred. Their sentencing, on 21 October 2014, follows a blatant unfair trial before the Supreme Military Court of Egypt during which seven people were sentenced to death, including one in absentia, and two others to life imprisonment.
On 2 April 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture (SRT) regarding the case of Mohammed Ali Hassan, a 31 year-old Egyptian journalist working for Egyptian News Network (ENN). He has been subjected to various acts of torture since his arrest in December 2014 and is currently on an open-ended hunger strike, putting his life at risk.
On 6 March 2015, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture (SRT), Juan E. Méndez issued its Observations on communications transmitted to Governments and replies received, an Addendum to its Report to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) in which the SRT provides observations on communications sent to States between 1 December 2013 and 30 November 2014. In light of Egypt's non-cooperation with his mandate, Mr. Méndez urged the Egyptian authorities to respond to the communications sent to them "without further delay."
On 24 March 2015, Alkarama sent an appeal to United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture (SRT) regarding the case of Ammar Mohammed Mohammed Mahmoud, a 19 year-old Egyptian student who has been subjected to various acts of torture since his arrest in November 2014. Detained in deplorable conditions inside Tora prison, Ammar remains at high risk of torture and has not been brought before a judge yet.
