Yemen: Report Launch - "Traumatising Skies" – Online Panel Discussion on U.S. Drone Operations in Yemen

On 24 June 2015 at 5.30pm, Alkarama will launch its new report on "Traumatising Skies: U.S. Drone Operations and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among Civilians in Yemen." The event will take the form of an online discussion will feature a panel of four experts from diverse backgrounds, including military, legal and psychiatry.

- Brandon Bryant, Former drone operator and Founder of the Project Red Hand which aims at raising awareness of issues such as the 'War on Terror';
- Marjorie Cohn, Author of "Drones and Targeted Killing: Legal, Moral, and Geopolitical Issues", Professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law and former president of the National Lawyers Guild;
- Dr. Mukhtar-ul-Haq, Head of the Psychiatry Department at Peshawar's Lady Reading Hospital in Pakistan, who has conducted research on the trauma of civilians who live under drones in Waziristan; and
- Radidja Nemar, Author of the report, Regional legal Officer at Alkarama.

Carried out with the precious help of the National Organization for Drone Victims in Yemen, the report focuses on the trauma that the U.S. drone policy inflicts on the civilian population living under drones, whether or not it involves a loss of life.

"Traumatising Skies" is based on a survey conducted between July and September 2014 on a sample of individuals living in areas of Yemen where drone operations are carried out by the U.S. It is the first report of its kind to study essentially the psychological consequences of the policy and practice of drone operations on the civilian population.

The findings show generalised trauma among the population, from not knowing when a drone might strike, why one's relatives are targeted, how to obtain redress, or even which kind of behaviour a Yemeni civilian may or may not adopt so it doesn't resemble a terrorist behaviour.

If you are in Geneva, you are welcome to come to Alkarama's Conference room, 150 route de Ferney, 1218 Le Grand-Saconnex.
