Yemen/Saudi Arabia: 27 Civilians From Same Family Killed by Saudi Air Strike in Saada

On 8 September 2015, Alkarama sent a communication to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions (SR SUMX) regarding the case of 27 members of a same family killed by an air strike launched by the Saudi-led coalition on Yemen in May 2015.

Yemen: 9 Media Workers Abducted by Houthi Rebels in Sana'a

On 3 September 2015, Alkarama sent and urgent appeal to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) regarding the case of nine media workers abducted by armed Houthi forces from Sana'a's Dream Castle Hotel on 9 June 2015 and disappeared since their transfer to an unknown location the following month. It is suspected that the reason behind the victims' abduction is that all of them had previously documented human rights violations committed by Houthi forces.

Yemen: UN Committee against Torture Adopts List of Issues Prior to Reporting in View of the Country's Third Review

On 6 May 2015, during its 54th session, the United Nations Committee against Torture (CAT) adopted a List of 34 issues prior to reporting (LoIPR), which was transmitted to Yemen as to facilitate the preparation of the report by the authorities. The UN experts inquired about the steps taken by the State to enforce the absolute prohibition of torture in a time of armed conflict, adopt a definition of torture compliant with the UN Convention against Torture (UNCAT), prosecute the perpetrators of such acts and ensure that detainees are provided with all fundamental safeguards. All these issues had been raised in Alkarama's list of 56 issues that it submitted to the CAT in February 2015 in view of the adoption of the LOIPR.

New Report Shows U.S. Drone Policy in Yemen Leads to Severe Trauma among Civilians and Sets Dangerous Precedent for International Community

A new report released in an online panel discussion by Alkarama on 24 June 2015 shows the traumatising impact that the U.S. drone policy has on civilians in Yemen, leading to considerable resentment and setting a dangerous precedent for the entire international community by trampling on fundamental rights and safeguards in complete secrecy and without accountability.

Yemen: "Human Rights in Turmoil" – 56 Issues to Raise during State's Review by the Committee against Torture

On 9 February 2015, Alkarama provided the Committee against Torture (CAT) with a list of 56 issues to be raised by the United Nations experts with the Yemeni authorities during their consideration of Yemen's initial report, which will take place during the CAT's 54th session from 20 April to 15 May 2015. The CAT is a body of 10 independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT) by its State parties, including Yemen which ratified the Convention in November 1991. Alkarama recalled that political instability and internal strive does not absolve the parties to the conflict from their responsibility to ensure that people under their control are not subjected to torture and ill-treatment.
