UAE: Jordanian journalist Taysir Salman detained for over four months due to Facebook post

A man is standing and smiling with his arms folded Jordanian journalist Taysir Hasan Mahmoud Salman was supposed to fly from the United Arab Emirates, where he currently lives, to Jordan on vacation on 3 December 2015; however, he was prevented from boarding his flight by the airport authorities. Ten days later, on 13 December, Taysir Salman was contacted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Abu Dhabi, which requested him to go to their building to be informed of the reasons why he was not allowed to leave the country. Upon arrival, around 7pm, Taysir was arrested by members of the State Security Forces and taken to an unknown location.

UAE: Jordanian Journalist Disappears Following Arrest by Criminal Investigation Department Police

On 13 December 2015, journalist Taysir Hasan Mahmoud Salman was arrested by police forces at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Abu Dhabi and taken to an unknown location. Almost two months later, he remains disappeared. In view of these facts, on 4 February 2016, Alkarama sent Taysir's case to the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), hoping that this United Nations Special Procedure for the protection of human rights will help shed light on his fate and whereabouts.

UAE: Two Chinese Uyghur Face Death Sentence if Deported to China

On 2 February 2016, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on minority issues (SR Minority), Rita Izsák-Ndiaye, asking her to call upon the Emirati authorities not to deport two Chinese citizens from the Uyghur Muslim Community, who could face the death penalty back in their country. Arrested in the United Arab Emirates in between June and July 2008 for their alleged involvement in terrorist acts, both men, who are to be released on 13 April 2016, face deportation to China, where they are likely to be retried and could be sentenced to death.

UAE: UN Experts Request Emirati Authorities to Immediately Release 5 Libyan Citizens Arbitrarily Detained

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) recently adopted Opinion No. 51/2015, which recognises the arbitrary character of the detentions of Salim Alaradi and four other Libyan citizens, and requests the Emirati authorities to release them immediately. Almost two months later, however, the five men remain detained. While welcoming the WGAD Opinion, Alkarama is extremely concerned over their fate, especially after their recent appearance before the State Security Chamber in the Federal Supreme Court, where they were accused of terrorism-related charges.

UAE: Activist Ahmed Mansoor wins Martin Ennals Award

Alkarama welcomes the selection, on 6 October 2015, of Emirati human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor as laureate of the 2015 Martin Ennals Award in recognition of his work providing credible and independent assessment of the human rights situation in the country.
