Algeria: Elected member of the FIS - arrested, crucified and disappeared - Alkarama sends Lakhdar Bouzania's case to the Human Rights Committee

BOUZENIA_LAKHDARAlkarama was mandated to submit a complaint to the Human Rights Committee regarding the disappearance of Mr Lakhdar Bouzenia. Arrested 24 May 1993, Mr Bouzenia was detained incommunicado and severely tortured, including being "crucified", before disappearing during his transfer to Constantine prison a few months after his arrest.

Alkarama has been mandated to submit a complaint to the Human Rights Committee concerning the disappearances of Tahar and his eldest son Bashir Bourefis, arrested in 1996 in the province of Jijel and gone missing ever since.

Algeria: Alkarama’s follow-up report to the Committee against Torture

In the context of four recommendations made by the Committee against Torture (CAT), Alkarama submitted a follow-up report to the CAT signaling the fact that these recommendations had yet not been put into place. During Algeria's third periodic review (CAT/C/DZA/3) between 2 and 5 May 2008, the CAT asked the State party to provide, in the space of one year, information concerning the follow-ups it should have made in the context of the Committee's recommendations as stated in paragraphs 4, 6, 12 and 15 of its final report.

Algeria : The Human Rights Committee ask for a reply to their final observations

The Special Rapporteur for the follow-up of final observations to the Human Rights Committee sent a letter on 27 August 2009 to the permanent representative of Algeria to the United Nations reminding him that in the framework of the Committee‘s final observations, the State of Algeria has not submitted any information for three of of the observations during the stipulated period of one year. On 7 November 2007, the Algerian permanent representative made generalized comments concerning the Committee's final observations.
