Algeria: Malik Medjnoune, arbitrarily detained for 10 years, still no trial

Today, 28 September 2009, 10 years have passed since the day Malik Medjnoune was abducted near his home in Tizi-Ouzou by the Algerian secret services of the Department of Intelligence and Security (DRS). After being held incommunicado for more than eight months and severely tortured, he was imprisoned without ever being tried.

Algeria: Ouaghlissi disappearance case submitted to HRC

On 27 September 1994, while at work, Maamar Ouaghlissi was arrested by three plain clothes agents who identified themselves as members of Security Forces. The grounds for the arrest were not given. Since then, Mr Ouaghlissi has disappeared.

Algeria: Adel Saker, reappears after 11 months of "disappearance"

Alkarama learned that Mr. Adel Saker, who was arrested on 26 May 2008 by police in Tamalous (Skikda), reappeared in Skikda prison on 12 April 2009, after being held incommunicado by the Department of Intelligence and Security (DRS), and having consequently gone missing.

Algeria: The national institution for human rights before the International Coordinating Committee of NHRIs

The Sub-Committee of Accreditation of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) has asked the Commission Nationale Consultative de Promotion et de Protection des Droits de l'Homme (CNCPPDH ) to provide within a year's time established evidence that it has not ceased to comply with the Paris Principles. Through this report, Alkarama hopes to contribute to the review by the ICC for the end of March 2009. According to this, the Sub-Committee "intends to recommend to the ICC its accreditation as status B", for the following reasons:

Algeria: The “Ksentini Commission” loses its status with the UN

The national institution for human rights (NHRIs) in Algeria, headed by Farouk Ksentini, was demoted by the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions (ICC). This decision is a setback for Algerian diplomacy, which has spared no effort to discredit the NGO and UN experts and human rights activists who have an interest in Algeria's situation.
