Syria: Three Men Still Disappeared Following Abduction by the Military Intelligence

In May 2016, Alkarama and Human Rights Guardians sent to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced Disappearances (WGEID) three cases of enforced disappearance of Syrian citizens who had been arrested by the Military Intelligence – or "Military Security", affiliated to the Ministry of Defence – in different towns in Syria. Alkarama hopes that the WGEID's intervention with the Syrian authorities will help disclosing their whereabouts.

Jordan: Release of Eyad Qunaibi After One Year in Detention for a Facebook Post

On 17 May 2016, Professor Eyad Qunaibi was released from Muwaqqar II prison where he was detained for "incitement against the political regime," for a having published a Facebook post criticising, among others, his country's ties with Israel and the "westernisation of Jordanian society". The previous day, the State Security Court reduced Qunaibi's sentence from two to one year of imprisonment – which he had already served – and ordered his release. While welcoming Qunaibi's release, Alkarama regrets that the State Security Court failed to recognise that he was arbitrarily detained for having exercised his right to freedom of expression and did not acquit him.

Yemen: Release of Human Rights Activist by Houthi-Saleh Coalition after 211 days of Detention

After 211 days of detention and torture, the Houthi-Saleh Coalition has finally released Yemeni human rights activist Antar Al Mabarizi. In October 2015, Al Mabarizi, along with 28 other activists and journalists, was arrested at a meeting for the planning of a march requesting authorities to provide the besieged city of Taiz with drinking water.

Sudan: Violent Crackdown Against Peaceful Demonstrators in Universities Campuses

Alkarama is deeply concerned by the ongoing repression against students and political opposition activists in diverse universities campuses across Sudan. This crackdown led to the arrest of dozens of students and the killing of at least two others by National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) officers in April 2016.
