Egypt : Arrest and torture of Mr Al Sayed

On 30 June 2011, Mr Al Sayed was arrested at his home by agents of the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Police, who were dressed as civilians. He was not presented with an arrest warrant nor was he given a reason for his arrest at the time.

Alkarama submitted to cases of Mohammed Amin Kamal, Ahmed Jaber Mahmoud Othman to the United Nations today. These two students were arrested by the military for having breached the curfew and were sentenced to five years imprisonment following an unfair trial.

Egypt: Conviction and detention of Maikel Nabil Sanad for criticizing the military

Maikel Nabil Sanad was arrested 28 March 2011 at his home for having criticized the army on his blog. He was the object of an expedited trial and was convicted 11 April 2011. Mr. Sanad was sentenced to three years imprisonment and a fine. He was detained in a military prison in Cairo.

Alkarama sent a request to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention 9 June 2011 to intervene with the Egyptian authorities on behalf of Mr. Sanad. We called for the release of Mr. Sanad due to his heavy sentence for expressing his opinion.

Alkarama has learned that the Egyptian authorities released Mr. Nabil El-Maghribi on June 2011. He had been taken to prison as a young man in the prime of his life, more than thirty years ago; he leaves as an old man of more than seventy.

Alkarama for Human Rights in Geneva has stated that the Egyptian authorities must work on investigating the instances of torture to which peaceful demonstrators in front of the Israeli embassy were subjected in the middle of last month after Army and Central Security forces came in to disperse the demonstrators.
