Yemen: HOOD and Alkarama condemn the continuing extra-judicial executions

The Alkarama Foundation and the Yemeni organisation HOOD condemn the US drone assassination of the Yemeni citizen Fahd Mohammad al-Quso, 38, in Azan, Shabwah province in the south of Yemen, on Sunday 6 May 2012. The US authorities continue to violate Yemen's sovereignty and to violate the right to life of individuals who are innocent civilians or untried suspects, under the pretext of protecting American national security.

The two organisations warn both the US and Yemeni authorities that such operations, which have recently become more frequent, have caused civilian death, and is fomenting further conflict in one of the world's most sensitive regions.

Alkarama and HOOD point out that the US, when it uses terror to fight terror, undermines the legal and international treaties to which it is a signatory, and contradicts the very values which entire generations have fought to uphold and which humanity has long struggled to protect. This causes fears of a broadening and continuation of the cycle of hate and violence.

HOOD and Alkarama are monitoring and documenting the extra-judicial executions with the aim of presenting them to the relevant UN human rights protection mechanisms.

HOOD and Alkarama join voices with those who are demanding an independent and transparent inquiry of extra-judicial executions in Yemen, and in particular those carried out by US forces as part of the "Global War on Terror". We urge the governments of the world to respect the human rights that are guaranteed in international treaties and covenants, foremost of which is the right to life.
