Syria: Disappearance of Syrian doctor last seen in irregular detention centre

Mr Omar Raad, a Syrian doctor, was arrested near his home in Al Zabadani, a city close to the Lebanese border in Syria, on 14 September 2011. That day, members of the State Security had put up a checkpoint on his street and arrested him when he passed the barrier. The security agents were clearly identified by people who witnessed the arrest but the State Security refused to officially recognize Mr Raad's detention.

It seems that the father of two has since then been transferred to Adraa in the suburbs of Damascus, where he was seen in the compound of a sugar factory. The factory was transformed into a detention centre and is currently used as such by the Air Force Intelligence. Since this, the family has not been able to receive further news of Mr Raad and they remain in uncertainty about his fate or whereabouts.

Alkarama submitted his case to the UN Working Group on Enforced Disappearance and other UN Special Procedures on 22 December 2011 and asked for their urgent intervention in favour of Mr Raad. Alkarama calls on the Syrian authorities to immediately re-establish contact between Mr Raad and his family and to release Mr Raad.
