Algeria : Universal Periodic Review before the Human Rights Council on 14 April 2008

On April 14, 2008, the Human Rights Council will examine the situation of human rights in Algeria as part of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). Delegates from Alkarama had attended the meetings on 8 April 2008 to review the situation in Morocco and Tunisia and noted especially for the latter country that its delegation had secured an agreed with stakeholders, particularly with the Troika Rapporteurs, on the final recommendations to be adopted. Alkarama fears that when reviewing Algeria this type of procedure is repeated.

The Council on Human Rights meets on April 15, 2008 to conduct the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Algeria. Alkarama presented within this framework a contribution on Nov. 20, 2007.

Algeria: Malik Medjnoun, detained since 9 years without trial, on indefinite hunger strike.

AlKarama sent an urgent appeal to the Committee on Human Rights to draw its attention on the situation of Malik Medjnoun, who was arrested on September 28, 1999 and detained without trial for almost nine years. The Algerian authorities have not acted on the findings of the Committee which had ordered in 2006 to either try him or release him. To protest against the refusal of the judge, Mr. Medjnoun began Monday, February 25, 2008 a indefinite hunger strike.
