Lebanon: Hassan Kayed risks being tortured following arrest by Lebanese authorities

On Wednesday, 26 October 2011, Hassan Kayed, a 34-year old Palestinian refugee living in Lebanon, was arrested by Lebanese Military Intelligence services. Since his arrest, his family have been unable to establish contact with him. The only information they have is that he is currently detained by the Military Intelligence in Mount Lebanon.

International and Local Groups Condemn Rise in Intimidation of Human Rights Defenders

The Lebanese authorities should immediately cease harassment of Saadeddine Shatila, of the international human rights group Alkarama, for his work documenting torture by security forces, a group of eleven international and local groups said at a news conference today. The groups also criticized an emerging pattern of intimidation against human rights defenders who raise concerns about security agencies. They also called on the Lebanese judicial authorities to investigate the allegations of torture documented by Alkarama.

Saadeddine Shatila, Alkarama's representative in Lebanon, was held yesterday morning, 25 July 2011, for questioning by Lebanese military intelligence in Beirut. According to the summons which he received last Friday, he was questioned regarding certain "security issues", but was released later the same day after seven hours of interrogation, which mainly concerned his human rights work.

Lebanon: Alkarama commends Lebanon release of wrongfully-detained Syrian refugees

All Syrian refugees detained by the Lebanese authorities for being in the country illegally have been released this week. Following their release, Prime Minister Mikati declared on Arab television channel Al-Arabiya that his government will "look at the issue of Syrian refugees ... from a purely humanitarian angle, away from politics".
