As announced in its press release of 24 December 2013, the Council of the Alkarama Foundation has been meeting regularly in recent days to discuss the measures to be taken to deal with the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to qualify Dr. Abd al- Rahman Omair Al Naimi as "Specially Designated International Terrorist".

As soon as he learned about the U.S. decision, Mr. Al Naimi informed the Council of the Foundation that he would resign from the Council so as not to "harm the organization" and to " dedicate himself to demonstrating that the serious accusations against him by the US authorities are baseless and false". The Council initially decided to accept the resignation of Mr. Al Naimi.

The Council of the Alkarama Foundation met yesterday following the announcement by the US Department of Treasury of its decision to qualify Dr Abd al-Rahman Omair Alnaimi, president of the Council as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist".

The Council takes note of this announcement and explores all ways and means to deal with this situation.

The Alkarama Foundation will continue to carry out its work in a serious, professional way and according to the values and principles which have always guided it in its mission for the defense and assistance of all victims of human rights violations in the Arab world.

Disappeared

Their families say that they are "neither dead nor alive", and it's as if they are dying a little bit every day... They are the invisible victims of armed conflict, the ones forgotten by the authorities... and they number in the thousands. From the 1970s to today, in Algeria, Syria, all the way to Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen, enforced disappearances transcend the past and reach into the present. Disappearances can take the form of torture, executions or secret detention. It constitutes a crime against humanity when widespread and systematic. But more than that - behind every picture of someone disappeared lies suffering, uncertainty and the torture of a family, affecting entire societies.

Mourad Dhina finally free!

The Paris court responsible for the consideration of the Algerian request for the extradition of Dr Mourad Dhina handed down its decision today.

The President of the trail chamber rejected the extradition request in a short deliberation, due to its lack of conformity with the 1964 extradition convention between Algeria and France and the French criminal procedure code.

Mourad Dhina Case: France responds to the UN Special Procedures

On 17 January 2012, Alkarama submitted to the UN Special Procedures information regarding the arrest of Dr. Mourad Dhina and the extradition request made by the Algerian authorities, and asked them to urgently intervene with the French authorities. The four Special Rapporteurs who made an urgent appeal to the Permanent Mission of France in Geneva have received a response from the French authorities which aims to be "reassuring".
