Jordan: Prosecuted intellectual faces fictitious charges

On 17 September 2010, Issam Mohamed Tahar Al Bargaoui Al Uteibi was summoned by the Jordanian General Intelligence services and immediately arrested. He was held incommunicado for 64 days before being transferred to Joueidah prison where he is currently detained.

Jordan: Abd Al-Salam Ashraf Released

At noon yesterday, Monday 28 September 2010, Alkarama learned that Ashraf Muhammad Yusuf Abd Al-Salam was released by Jordanian intelligence services.

Mr Abd Al-Salam Ashraf was arrested on 28 June 2010 following a summons by the General Intelligence Services in Amman. He was immediately arrested, put in secret detention and tortured.

Following his arrest Alkarama sent an urgent appeal on 26 July 2010 to the Special Rapporteur on Torture requestion his intervention with the Jordanian authorities in order to launch a full, neutral investigation into the allegations of torture suffered by Mr. Abd Al-Salam Ashraf during his secret detention, and to identify and punish the malefactors.

Alkarama expresses its concern at the continued abuses carried out by Jordanian police forces and the security and intelligence services and calls upon Jordan to prosecute those responsible for torturing Mr. Abd Al-Salam Ashraf.

Jordan: Jordanian writer disappeared by security forces

Mr Issam Tahar Al Uteibi, a well-known Jordanian writer and theologian, was disappeared on 17 September 2010 by officers of the Jordanian Central Intelligence Department in the Wadi Al Sir district of Amman, after being called in for questioning.

Jordan: Ashraf Abdulsalam Tortured while in Secret Detention

Ashraf Abdulsalam was arrested on 28 June 2010 after appearing for questioning at the Jordanian Intelligence services' headquarters in Amman. He was held incommunicado and reportedly tortured while in custody.
