Interpol Withdraws International Arrest Warrant by Algeria Against Lawyer Rachid Mesli

On 13 May 2016, the Commission for the Control of Interpol's files decided, after a long legal battle, to drop the international arrest warrant issued in 2003 by the Algerian authorities against lawyer Rachid Mesli, Director of Alkarama's Legal Department.

Israel Violates the Convention Against Torture in Palestine, Says UN Human Rights Monitoring Body

On 13 May 2016, the United Nations Committee against Torture (CAT) published its Concluding Observations following the submission by Israel of its fifth periodic report and the review sessions held on 3 and 4 May 2016. During the review, the Committee members raised a number of issues including the arbitrary detention of Palestinians under the administrative detention regime, including minors, the practice of torture and the punitive demolition of Palestinian homes.

Sudan: Renewed Arbitrary Arrests, Enforced Disappearances and Torture of Students

The situation in Sudan's university campuses continues to be a cause of concern for Alkarama which documented together with the Arab Coalition for Sudan (ACS), new cases of human rights violations against students, in reprisal against their participations to peaceful demonstrations. On 5 May 2016, several students, including Badr Eldin Mohamed Abdulrahman and Mai Adil Ibrahim Mohamed, were arrested by plainclothes National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) officers while they were in Mr Nabil Adib's law firm in Khartoum.

Saudi Arabia: Torture of Indian doctor during three months of disappearance

Dr Sabeel Ahmed, an Indian national residing in the city of Hofuf in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia was arrested by twenty Intelligence officers dressed in civilian clothes who raided his house on 9 February 2016. They took him away without presenting a warrant or informing him of the charges held against him.

Saudi Arabia: Committee against Torture presents its Concluding Observations and Alkarama launches a program for monitoring their implementation

The Committee against Torture has, on 13 May 2016, published its Concluding Observations in response to Saudi Arabia's second periodic report (CAT/C/SAU/2) and review sessions of 22 and 25 April 2016. In preparation of the review, Alkarama presented the experts of the committee with a list of issues and a shadow report, outlining its evaluation of Saudi Arabia's compliance with the Convention. Alkarama welcomes the Committee's concluding observations which very much reflect the organization's main points of concern.

Syria: Three Men Still Disappeared Following Abduction by the Military Intelligence

In May 2016, Alkarama and Human Rights Guardians sent to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced Disappearances (WGEID) three cases of enforced disappearance of Syrian citizens who had been arrested by the Military Intelligence – or "Military Security", affiliated to the Ministry of Defence – in different towns in Syria. Alkarama hopes that the WGEID's intervention with the Syrian authorities will help disclosing their whereabouts.
