You may recall that in late February 2009, Alkarama submitted his case to the Special Rapporteur on Torture, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances, the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq and also to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The IPU's Human Rights Committee reiterated its appreciation in being kept informed of the proceedings and the outcome of Mr Al-Dainy's situation. It was recalled that Mr Al-Dainy had recently re-appeared (see communiqué), however his whereabouts remain unknown. During the session, Alkarama was able to provide key information related to the case, specifically with concerns to the arrests and subsequent detention of many of his family members and staff.
The Committee reiterated its desire to receive a copy of the indictment from the Iraqi authorities and be given precise information on the evidence adduced to substantiate the charges brought against Mr Al-Dainy.
The Committee has requested that the IPU's Secretary General convey their decision to the Iraqi parliamentary authorities and Prime Minister, inviting them to provide more information. The case will be further examined during the 121st IPU Assembly (October 2009).
