Iraq: Samir Ammar tortured in Kirkurk following puzzling suicide attempt

Samir Afif Ammar was sitting in a small café in Deir Al-Zor, a city in northeastern Syria on the Euphrates, when a man he had never met named "Abu Omar" sparked a conversation. Abu Omar said he could give him work in an Iraqi oil field and he promised him a good salary. It was January 2009, and Abu Omar would soon thereafter smuggle a then 19 year-old Samir across the border to Iraq. Samir spent two weeks in Iraq, and as recounts, "I can't remember the rest."

USA/Iraq: Omar Al-Utaibi disappeared - Iraqi authorities deny involvement

Omar Al-Utaibi was arrested at an Iraqi-American military checkpoint in Al-Falouja on 31 January 2004 and has since disappeared. The Iraqi authorities denied holding him. He is the son of Issam Al-Utaibi, arrested and arbitrarily detained by the Jordanian authorities before being released in 2008; the UN later found his detention to be arbitrary.

Iraq: Victim of 2005 Interior Ministry kidnapping - Hassan Alani was only 15, and has since disappeared

Alkarama has asked the Working Group on Enforced Disappearances (WGEID), today, to contact thee Iraqi authorities with regards to the disappearance of Hassan Alani, who was abducted by agents of the Iraqi Interior Ministry from outside his home in Baghdad on 6 September 2005. He was 15 years old at the time and it has been almost five year since Hassan's parents last heard any news.

Iraq-USA: Abdenasser Hassan, tortured by U.S. forces in Iraq

Abdenasser Hassan, a Palestinian from Lebanon, was arrested in Iraq by U.S. military forces in 2003 and eventually released in August 2009 without ever having been tried. He was severely tortured throughout his detention. On 8 March 2010, Alkarama submitted his case to the Special Rapporteur on Torture, requesting his intervention with the U.S. and Iraq. Alkarama has asked for an independent investigation to be initiated into the violations against Mr Hassan.
