Egypt: Whereabouts of 17 prisoners leaked by released prisoners

Between 1992 and 1997, 17 people disappeared after being arrested by agents of the General Directorate for State Security Investigations.  Amongst the 17 who remain in custody were several men who were released soon after initial questioning. It was these men who eventually managed to contact the families of the missing persons to inform them that they had seen their loved ones at the Investigative Bureau Headquarters in Lazoghli, Cairo.

Egypt: Arbitrary deprivation of liberty of Mr Tarek Al Zumer, now detained in prison for 28 years

Mr Tarek Abdelmoujoud Al Zumer, now 49, and an agricultural engineer, was arrested in October 1981 and charged for conspiracy in the case of the assassination of the Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat. In 1982 the High Court of State Security sentenced him to 15 years in prison.

Egypt: Arbitrary detention of Magdy Ahmed Hussein

Magdy Ahmed Hussein, 57, a leading opponent of the Egyptian government, was arrested on 31 January 2009 at the Rafah border crossing upon his return from the Gaza Strip. On 11 February 2009, he was immediately brought before a military court and sentenced to two years in prison and fined 5, 000 Egyptian pounds (900 dollars). He is currently serving this sentence in Al Mourj prison, Cairo.
