Mauritania : First review by the UN Committee against Torture after 7 year-delay

On 8 and 10 May 2013, Mauritania will be reviewed for the first time by the UN Committee against torture in Geneva during its 50th session. The state party finally submitted its national report in January 2012 following a seven-year delay. The review is aimed at assessing the implementation of the Convention against Torture in the country. In this framework, Alkarama submitted an alternative report which presents an overview on the practice of torture in the country. We also will meet with the UN Committee before the beginning of the review to brief them about our main concerns in this matter.

Mr. Oubeid Ould Imigine, Mr. Biram Ould Dah Ould Abeid, Mr. Yacoub Diarra, Mr. Abidine Ould Maatala, Mr. Ahmed Hamdy Ould Hamar Vall, Mr.
Leid Ould lemlih, Mr. Boumediane Ould Batta, all human rights defenders and activists from the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement, were arrested on 29 April 2012 for having demonstrated and burned in public some books justifying slavery.

Mauritania: Six months since the disappearances of fourteen detainees from Nouakchott prison

On 23 May of last year, fourteen prisoners sentenced to heavy punishments for terrorist infractions were taken in the middle of the night from the civil prison of Nouakchott by agents of the armed forces. Other detainees at the prison witnessed the event. Among those disappeared were Mohamed Sebti and Mohamed Hmednah, two Mauritanians aged 26 and 27.

Mauritania: Journalist, Hanevy Ould Dahah, arbitrarily detained after publishing article

The Editor in Chief of Taqadoumy news network, Hanevy Ould Dahah (33 year old resident of Nouakchott), was arrested on 18 June 2009 and held in custody for five days; after which he was brought before an investigative magistrate on charges of "civil and moral indecency". His arrest came after he published an article on Taqadoumy's website criticizing presidential candidate Ibrahima Moctar Sarr. Despite having served his subsequent six month sentence, he remains in custody.
