Egypt: Journalist Hassan El Kabany Repeatedly Tortured in Tora Prison

On 24 September 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (SRT) regarding the arrest of 32-year-old freelance journalist Hassan Mahmoud Ragab El Kabany in January 2015. Reportedly tortured on numerous occasions, including in September, El Kabany has not been brought before a judge in his eight-month detention, has been denied any form of medical care and remains at high risk of ill-treatment in Tora high security prison.

On 24 September 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) regarding the disappearance of 17-year-old Khaled Mohamed El Beltagy following his abduction by the Security Forces on 22 September 2015. The son of Mohamed El Beltagy, Secretary General of the Freedom and Justice Party − the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood − Khaled is at high risk of being tortured again during his secret detention, for the second time in less than a year.

On 23 September 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), regarding the respective abductions of Taalat Hosni Quranu Ali Al Sharkawy and Abdelrahman Mohammed Abdelbasser by the Homeland Security and the Central Security Forces in August and September 2015. The authorities have been unresponsive to their families' inquiries, who fear that they could be tortured or ill-treated while being secretly detained.

On 22 September, Alkarama sent a communication to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (SRT) regarding the case of Ahmed Raafat Al Sayed Ali , a 20-year-old student who was arrested by the General Investigations in May 2014. Repeatedly tortured in detention, Ahmed was sentenced to three years in prison in July 2014 and has been since detained in Wadi El Natrun prison where he still faces ill-treatment and has been denied the right to see a doctor.

Egypt: Head of Legal Team Defending Civilians Convicted in Biggest Mass Military Trial Arbitrarily Detained

On 17 September 2015, Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers (SRIJL) regarding the arrest and detention of the head of the legal team defending nearly 500 individuals sentenced in Egypt's biggest mass trial of civilians before a military court. 54-year-old lawyer, Abdelmaksoud Ahmed Abdelmaksoud El Damanhoury was arrested by the Homeland Security in Damanhour in September 2015. Detained inside a Central Security Forces Camp since, he is accused under trumped-up charges and is at high risk of torture in retaliation for his work.
