Bahrain : Activists' TV channel jammed by the Kingdom

A little studio in an industrial park in suburban London. This is the very place where last 17 July, fifteen Bahraini activists launched Lualua TV, an independent TV channel. They previously tried to broadcast directly from Bahrain but were denied the required permit. When the activists began to air their programmes from the UK, the Kingdom's authorities started jamming of Lualua TV despite changing frequency several times.

In follow up to Alkarama's initial press release of 23 May 2011, Alkarama can now confirm that former Bahraini members of Parliament Mr Matar Matar and Mr Jawad Fairuz Ghuloom are being detained by the Bahraini authorities, and are currently undergoing an unfair trial. In light of this information, and the lack of response to Alkarama's letter to the authorities, Alkarama submitted their case to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention today.

Alkarama is concerned at the arrest and apparent disappearance of two former Bahraini Members of Parliament in Bahrain, following unusual methods of arrest. Mr Jawad Fairuz, aged 48 and Mr Mattar Mattar, aged 35 were both arrested on 2 May 2011 and have not been heard of since.

Bahrain: Kuwaiti Canadian kidnapped by police at airport

Nasser Bader Al-Raas, 29, both a Kuwaiti and Canadian national, currently living in Kuwait, was arrested on 20 March 2011 at Bahrain International Airport, 4km north of Manama. Mr Raas had flown to Bahrain on 6 March 2011 for family reasons and was returning home to Kuwait when he was arrested. Alkarama was told that after check-in, he spoke with a friend on the phone, but never boarded the plane. While witnesses report he was arrested by police officers at the airport, he has yet to reappear.
