Algeria: Cyber-activist, Tarek Mameri, sentenced to 8 months in prison and a $10,000 fine

The cyber-activist, Tarek Mameri, was sentenced this morning by the correctional court of Algiers to a suspended sentence of 8 months imprisonment, a $10,000 fine, and $100,000 in damages and interest for, "insulting a constituent body", "destruction of public goods", "destruction of administrative documents", and "direct incitement to gather a mob."

Algeria: Political activist Abdellah Benaoum is free!

Update
- Algerian political activist Abdellah Benaoum was freed today following his appeal before the Court of Relizane. On 6 June 2012, he was sentenced by the Rélizane court to six months in prison for having attended a trial to support demonstrators charged in front of the court.

The Human Rights Council reviews Algeria

The human rights situation in Algeria was discussed today by the Human Rights Council in the framework of the Universal Periodic Review. At the head of one of the largest state delegations attending this session, Mr. Mourad Medelci came to present, in French, a national report which notably highlighted the country's progress of women's rights, the "responsible" management of the "national tragedy", a process of political and institutional reform which has expanded the areas of freedom and important efforts made in the educational and health sectors.

Algeria: Human Rights Committee once again condemns Algeria

The Human Right Committee has just made public its findings regarding the disappearance of Mammar Ouaghlissi and has again condemned Algeria for having violated numerous rights protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, including the right to life and the right not to be subjected to torture or mistreatment. Alkarama had filed a complaint on 1 July 2009 to the United Nations Human Rights Committee on behalf of Mrs Farida Ouaghlissi, Mammar's wife.

Case of Mourad Dhina: Prosecutor qualifies Algeria Extradition Request as 'Grotesque'

This Wednesday, 20 June, the Algerian government's request for the extradition of Dr Mourad Dhina was once again examined by the Paris court. To recall, during the last substantial hearing on 21 March, the court was confronted by the contradictions and incoherence of the file presented by the Algerian authorities, and asked for further information, including specific documents. In particular the court requested a copy of the document referring the case to the criminal court of Algiers on 26 October 2004.
