Mauritania: Anti-Slavery Activists Sentenced to 3 to 15 Years Imprisonment

On 5 October 2016, Alkarama seized the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders (SR HRDs) with the case of 13 activists from the anti-slavery NGO, Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA Mauritanie), Amadou Tidjane Diop, Balla Touré, Hamady Lehbouss, Ahmed Amarvall, Khattry M'Bareck, Mohamed Daty, Jemal Beylil, Ousmane Anne, Ousmane, Abdallahi Matallah Seck, Moussa Biram, Abdallahi Abou Diop et Mohamed Jaroullah.

Iraq: Disappearance of Maan Al Samarrai from Abu Ghraib Prison since July 2013

Maan Al Samarrai, a 41-year-old resident of Al Karkh, Baghdad, was detained in Abu Ghraib prison when, on 23 July 2013, hundreds of convicts escaped, while the remaining prisoners were transferred to unknown locations. His family does not have any official information on his fate and whereabouts since then, despite the fact that his brother, now free, reported they were detained together in Nasiriya prison in June 2015 and another informal contact referred that in December 2015 he was held in Baghdad International airport detention centre. Concerned about his fate, Alkarama and Al Wissam Humanitarian Assembly informed the United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) of his case, hoping that this treaty body − a committee of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED) by its State parties − could help locate him.

Mauritania: Malian National Sentenced to Death Following Unfair Trial

On 6 October 2016, Alkarama seized the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) of the case of Yaya Cissé, a Malian national arbitrarily detained in Mauritania for more than four years and sentenced to death on the basis of confessions obtained under torture.

Saudi Arabia: Advocacy Campaign on Arbitrary Detention and Prosecution of Human Rights Defenders in the Kingdom

On 12 October 2016, which marks the 7th anniversary of the establishment of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), Alkarama will be launching an international 11-day advocacy campaign - including a letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as an indepth report as well as a campaign video - to raise awareness of the systematic practice of arbitrary detention in Saudi Arabia – where the authorities prosecute anyone critical of the government – and to shed light on the continuing repression and harassment of the 11 members of ACPRA for their peaceful human rights activism.

Saudi Arabia: Committee on the Rights of the Child Issues its Conclusions After the Country’s Review

On 7 October 2016, the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) published its Concluding Observations on the third and fourth periodic review of Saudi Arabia held during its 73rd sessionfrom 13 to 30 September. The Committee's experts assessed the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), ratified by Saudi Arabia in 1996, on the basis of information provided by both NGOs, as well as the State party in its national report.

Algeria: Alkarama Brings Case of Former National Liberation Army Sadek Rsiwi before the Human Rights Committee

On 7 September 2016, Alkarama submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Committee (HRCttee) the case of Sadek Rsiwi, a veteran of the National Liberation Army (ALN) and father of eight children, who disappeared in 1996 after refusing to take the lead of a local militia at the request of the Intelligence and Security Services (DRS), thus refusing to get involved in the civil war that followed the January 1992 military coup.
