Alkarama sends letter to High Commissioner for Human Rights on lack of Government protection for Yemeni Jewish minority

Following information provided by its office in Sanaa, Yemen, Alkarama has sent a letter to the High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the concerning situation of the Jewish community in Amran Governorate, Yemen, which has been threatened with forced displacement to the capital, Sana'a, by the Government in order ‘to better ensure their protection'.

Alkarama sent an urgent appeal to the Special Rapporteur on Follow-up of Views of the Human Rights Committee, asking them to put pressure on the Algerian authorities to try Medjnoun Malik. Accused of complicity in the assassination of singer Lounes Matoub, he claims he is innocent and has been waiting 10 years to be tried. He has been on a hunger strike since 31 January 2009.

Algeria: Medjnoun Malik has begun a hunger strike after waiting 10 years for his trial

Malik Medjnoun, accused of complicity in the assassination of singer Lounes Matoub, has been detained without trial for nearly 10 years. To protest against this situation, Mr. Malik Medjnoun decided to start a hunger strike, beginning29 January 2009.
ECOSOC: Alkarama criticizes suspension recommendation

Today the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)-Non-Governmental Organisation Committee met in New York and recommended the suspension of the Arab Commission for Human Rights (ACHR) for one year, on a request by the Algerian Permanent Mission to the UN. Algeria's complaint was based on the appearance by the ACHR's Permanent Representative at the time, Mr Mesli, at the Human Rights Council session in Geneva on 10 June 2008. Mr Mesli is also the Legal Director in Alkarama. Alkarama is a Geneva-based human rights non-governmental organization (further information at end).
