Syria: Release of Mr Khalous, on-going secret detention of Mr Anjileh

Today, Alkarama informed the United Nations Special Procedures about the recent development in the cases of two Syrian nationals, Mr Fady Khalous and Mr Mohammad Tawfiq Anjileh, who disappeared on 19 February 2012.

Alkarama has been working on their case since their arrest, on 19 February 2012, submitting it to the attention of the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances.

Today, we are pleased to announce that Mr Khalous was released on 31 March 2012, after 40 days of detention. However, we regret that a different fate has been reserved for Mr Anjiled, who remains disappeared.

Following his release, Mr Khalous reported that, after having been ambushed and arrested by the Syrian Military Intelligence, he and Mr Anjileh were brought to the 291 Detention Centre in Damascus, where we believe Mr Anjileh is detained, outside the protection of the law, and where sever torture is regularly inflicted on those detained.

Alkarama welcomes the positive development in Mr Khalous's case but remains concerned at the secret detention of Mr Anjileh, who is at high risk of torture. We therefore call on the Syrian authorities to release Mr Anjileh or place him under the protection of the law. We also reiterate our request to the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances to calls on the Syrian authorities to ensure that Mr Anjileh is protected from secret detention and torture.
