United Arab Emirates: Mr Hassan Al-Diqqi, human rights defender, sentenced to 10 years in jail

In 2006, he created his own human rights organisation, which was not recognised by the authorities -  Emirates People Rights Organisation (Emirates PRO) - known in the country through its website, on which he denounced the lack of political and civil freedoms as well as the diverse abuses and violations of his co-citizens' rights: www. Emiratespro.com.

During a prison visit before being judged, Mr Al-Diqqi  confirmed that he had being subjected to blackmail from the authorities since his arrest and that he had been asked to close his website and give up on all human rights activities in his country in exchange for his release.

Because he did not accept the conditions dictated by the authorities, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment. As soon as Alkarama has detailed information on the conduct of the proceedings, it will inform UN organs.

For more information on the case, see our press release from 30 July 2008.
